Michael Schlein is president and CEO of Accion, a global nonprofit dedicated to building a financially inclusive world. Accion has helped build 65 microfinance institutions in 32 countries, which provide millions of clients with financial tools that help improve their lives. Accion also provides venture capital to new companies that promote disruptive innovation in financial services at the base of the pyramid. Accion’s Center for Financial Inclusion tackles industry-wide challenges; its Smart Campaign is the first global consumer protection campaign for those living in poverty.
Previously, Mr. Schlein served as president of Citigroup’s International Franchise Management; prior to that he ran Citigroup’s communications, philanthropy, government relations, branding and human resources. He served as chief of staff at the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission under President Clinton, and with New York City Mayors Dinkins and Koch. In 2014, Mayor Bill de Blasio appointed him Chairman of the NYC Economic Development Corporation.
